Word High July: Alaala, a tribute to Daft Punk’s ‘RAM’

via areadingwritr

Salut! I’m back, back, back again with another Word High July post. It’s currently over, but I still have a few words to go. This brings us to:

Alaala: a memory, keepsake, remembrance

Now, I had so many ideas to write, but I decided to write a tribute to Daft Punk’s last and greatest album, Random Access Memories or simply RAM. When I returned to writing short stories a few months ago, this album was my constant background musical companion, as I wrote late into the night. This album taught me about music layers, composition, and appreciation. It makes one look beyond the lyrics, ponder about life and love. It allows you to remember that joy is ever present, whether in dancing, loving, or living. It makes you pause and think.

I can’t speak music’s language (yet), but RAM is teaching me so much after all these years. I’m in no way endorsing DP or encouraging you to go out and buy/listen to RAM; I’m just in my musical feels. 😃 🎶

So, this piece is dedicated to my favorite album of all time, RAM. The 13 blue bold words are the titles of the songs featured on the album. The line “French Touch was rooted in silver and gold” refers to Thomas and Guy-Man’s helmets and their contribution to French House music.

Word High July: Mahal

We’re two-halves of one solid combination. There’s balance there – completeness between us,

Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo

So the Guy-Man said while talking about his other Daft Punk half, Thomas Bangalter, and I decided that I wanted to dedicate this piece to, well, other halves. Let’s take a look at the second word for this month:

Mahal: love, dear, beloved

Man, am I slow or what when it comes to writing these prompts! I love this word, though! It’s soft and musical sounding to the ear. When I first saw the word, I knew what the title of this one was going to be: Ma Moitié. It’s French for ‘my other half’. I wanted to dedicate this piece to the epic, iconic, disastrous French poems I’ve read and had second thoughts about, but it didn’t turn out so. Here’s the first ramble:

Mon chéri,
Love has no law
stating that I can’t love you
with your imperfect flaw

put my arms around you
when you fall
run to you when you call

for you’re ma moitié

I didn’t like some of the wording, so I tweaked it just a bit, and this is the result:

This piece is sort of a draft. I’ll attempt to extend it at some point, as words seem to neglect me at the moment.

However, I couldn’t decide on one design, so I made two just for the fun of it. Let me know which one you prefer. Here’s the other one:

Bon weekend!

Word High July: Likha

via areadingwritr

In 2016, I participated in a writing prompt called ‘Word High July’! I love learning new words, so it was a great pleasure to learn Filipino words. Well, areadingwritr brought it back, and although I’m no wordsmith of sorts, I decided to partake in it once again. I was looking for a way to be more active, et voilà! I’ll take you behind the thoughts of attempting to write.

Likha: a piece of art or fiction created with intelligence and skills

This is the first prompt. I found the word adorable, and I just knew I had to contribute to it. I wanted to take a funish approach to it, so I started throwing out whatever words came to mind:

Dream it, sketch it
Stream it, etch it
Now erase it

If you’re familiar with “Technologic” by Daft Punk, you’ll understand where the thought process was heading, but that format didn’t work out as planned…

…so I went another route:

I long to set words on fire
For of this craft I’ll never tire
So I shine and polish

Although I like where this was going, I didn’t finish it. It takes a while for me to settle on something, and I eventually did after getting inspired by one of my nightly devotions about the Creator. And so, this is my contribution:

Like I said, I’m no wordsmith, but I love writing, and it’s good to be posting once again. I’ll be getting to your blog soon. Bon weekend!

‘One More Time’ for Daft Punk!

Daft Punk retired earlier this year on Feb 22 after 28 years in the music business. I didn’t actually grow up listening to this French-based duo, but I got my life from some of their music. Werk! Anyways, the helmet-wearing duo created some of the best electronic music I’ve ever heard, and they were fashion from helmet to boots.

Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter defined house music worldwide. It’s a genre I came to appreciate whenever I felt like dancing. There are so many things I can say about DP, but anyone can find that on the internet. Their focus was always on the music, so it’s only fitting to talk about that.

I can’t quite remember which song made me really appreciate DP, but I remember loving “Around the World”, the second single from their debut studio album. When I was young, I wanted to be a DJ, and I’d comply a list of tunes that I thought was the top of the tops and have them burned to a CD which I’ll then blast at full volume on weekends. So, this song brought out my inner DJ despite the lyrics being nothing, but the title of the song times 144!

“Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” and “Technologic” are perfect siblings, but “Human After All” was on another level. Despite the simplicity of the lyrics, I get the overall message that we are all human, and we shouldn’t discriminate against each other. We all have a lot of work to do on ourselves especially where the heart is concerned as we’re not perfect. But that’s a topic for another day.

Then DP’s 4th and final studio album Random Access Memories came out. I recall it being the coolest album I’ve heard in years and just had to get my hands on a copy. And when I got my copy? Let’s just say that I didn’t listen to another album for a very long time. I played the album while writing, in the office, and even to bed. From the opener (“Give Life Back to Music”) to the closing (“Contact”), the album was simply a modern masterpiece. It deserves to be hung where the Mona Lisa currently hangs. It was a mind-blower that breathed life into music. If I were to comply a list of the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time, RAM will definitely be in the top 10. It is that elegant, that polished, that excitable.

Thanks for the memories Daft Punk! It was a great ride while it lasted, so let’s hear it for DP ‘One More Time’!
